Laser eye surgery is a modern treatment method used to correct refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. This surgery reshapes the cornea of the eye so that light can focus correctly on the retina. There are different types of laser surgery such as LASIK, PRK and SMILE.
One of the most common types of laser eye surgery is LASIK. In LASIK surgery, the top layer of the cornea is lifted into a thin flap and the corneal tissue underneath is reshaped with a laser. The flap is placed back into place and heals naturally. The advantages of LASIK include a quick recovery time and minimal discomfort. Most patients can return to normal activities within a few days.
PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) is a method in which the upper layer of the cornea is completely removed and the corneal surface is reshaped with a laser. The upper layer grows back over time. PRK is suitable for patients with thinner corneal structures and provides good results in the long term.
Another method, SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction), is performed by creating and removing a lenticule with a laser by making a small incision in the cornea. The SMILE method affects the corneal structure less and provides a smaller incision, less discomfort and a faster healing process.
A comprehensive eye examination is performed before the surgery. During this examination, your eye structure and refractive error are evaluated. Your general health and medications are also reviewed. Local anesthesia is used during the surgery, so you will not feel any pain. Laser eye surgery usually takes 15-30 minutes and you can go home immediately after the surgery.
After surgery, a protective cap is placed over your eye and medications are prescribed. There may be discomfort and blurred vision in the eye for the first few days, but full recovery usually occurs within a few weeks. Regular eye checks are performed after surgery, which are important for monitoring the healing process.
After surgery, you will notice a significant improvement in your vision. Colors will appear more vibrant and sharp. It is important to follow your doctor's recommendations to protect your eye health. You should avoid overexerting your eyes and have regular eye exams. Some patients may continue to use glasses or contact lenses after surgery, but most patients will need less vision aids.
Suitable candidates for laser eye surgery are generally people who are 18 years of age or older, have stable eye numbers, and have adequate corneal thickness. They also need to have good general eye health and no serious eye disease.
Local anesthesia drops are used during the surgery, so you won't feel any pain. There may be some mild discomfort and a stinging sensation after the surgery, but this usually passes within a few days.
Laser eye surgery usually takes 15-30 minutes total for both eyes. The surgery itself is very short and often the preparation and recovery times can be longer.
Most patients notice vision improvement immediately after surgery, but full recovery and stable vision usually occur within a few weeks. During this time, there may be some mild blurring and discomfort in the eyes.
