Excimer laser surgeryIt is a safe and effective laser treatment used to correct refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism in people who do not want to wear glasses or contact lenses. It is one of the most frequently used methods of modern eye surgery and has been successfully used worldwide for many years.
The excimer laser is a laser technology that corrects refractive errors by shaping the eye's cornea (the transparent front surface) with a specialized beam. The laser beam vaporizes the tissue at the micron level without applying heat. This reshapes the cornea, allowing light to focus accurately on the retina.
In this way, the patient can have clear vision without glasses or lenses.
For excimer laser treatment, the following criteria must be met:
Being over 18 years old
Eye number has remained stable in the last year
Having a refractive error in the range of myopia (–1 to –10), hyperopia (+1 to +5), or astigmatism (±6)
Appropriate corneal structure and thickness
No other disease in the eye (keratoconus, advanced dry eye, etc.)
Before laser treatment, suitability is assessed with a detailed eye examination and topographic mapping.
Excimer laser treatment is a completely painless procedure that usually takes 5–10 minutes, is performed with anesthetic drops, and has two main application methods:
A thin layer of the corneal surface is lifted, the laser is applied to the underlying layer, and the layer is then placed back in place. Recovery time is short, and vision clears quickly.
The epithelial layer on the corneal surface is removed, and the laser is applied directly. Recovery time is slightly longer, but it's more suitable for people with thin corneas.
The method to be applied is determined by the patient's eye structure.
After LASIK, most patients can return to work the next day.
After PRK/No-touch, you can return to your daily life within 3–5 days.
The eye may feel stinging, watering, or be sensitive to light for a few days.
Protective drops are used for the first week and rubbing the eyes should be avoided.
The final vision quality usually settles within 1 month.
Can eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses
It is applied in a short time and the recovery is fast.
Provides long-term, permanent results
It is a safe, painless and repeatable procedure.
Provides a quick return to daily life
Most patients no longer need glasses or contact lenses after surgery. However, in older patients, glasses may be necessary, especially for near vision (presbyopia).
No. It's performed with eye drops for anesthesia. There's no pain during the surgery. There may be mild discomfort for a few days after PRK, but this is temporary.
Yes. Excimer laser permanently reshapes the cornea. However, natural age-related changes may eventually lead to the need for glasses (for example, age-related nearsightedness).
Yes. Both eyes are usually treated in the same session. This shortens the recovery period and ensures symmetrical vision.
No. The laser procedure is performed at the micron level on the transparent layer of the eye and does not leave any visible scars from the outside.
With LASIK laser surgery, you can generally return to work the next day, while with PRK, it can be done a few days later. It's important to follow your doctor's recommendations for more detailed information.
